What Country Is .ae? The Complete Guide to the UAE Domain

You typed “what country is .ae” because you saw an address ending in .ae on an invoice or a business card, or because you are setting up a website for your company and cannot decide between a .ae domain and a .com. The short answer is the United Arab Emirates. The more useful question, in our view, is what this extension means for your business, who is allowed to register it, and how you connect it to the server that will host your website and your email. This guide collects what you need from our work with UAE companies since 2003, without the jargon.

Quick Answer

.ae is the country code of the United Arab Emirates on the internet: the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), whose two letters are the UAE’s ISO 3166-1 code, AE. The extension was delegated on 1 December 1992 and is administered today by the .ae Domain Administration (.aeDA), part of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). You can register directly at the second level as company.ae, at the third level as company.co.ae, or in Arabic script under امارات. We register these domains for our UAE clients through the portal; the detailed trade-off is in our .ae vs .com comparison, and the buying steps are in our guide to purchasing a domain.

What Country Is .ae?

The country: the United Arab Emirates. Every country has a two-letter code in the ISO 3166-1 standard; the UAE’s is AE, and the .ae extension comes from it. Country-code extensions are recorded in the Root Zone Database kept by IANA, and the .ae record there lists a registration date of 1 December 1992, the WHOIS server whois.aeda.net.ae and the registration services site aeda.ae, as shown in the IANA record for .ae.

Who runs it: the .ae Domain Administration, a unit of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority. The administration’s page on the regulator’s site shows a counter of registered domains that read 350,573 on the day we checked, 2026-10-11, as seen on the .aeDA page at TDRA. Recent history explains the current setup: the extension was re-delegated from Etisalat (UAEnic) to the regulator in January 2008, and the .aeDA registry went live with the registry-registrar model on 3 August 2008, according to the Wikipedia article on .ae. That model is why you do not buy the domain from the regulator directly, but from an accredited registrar or a reseller working with one.

Examples you see every day: the official government portal u.ae, the regulator’s site tdra.gov.ae, and most government bodies, banks and universities in the country. When a UAE customer sees .ae at the end of an address, they immediately understand that the organisation is addressing them, and we will come back to that point.

.ae, .co.ae or امارات.? The Three Forms

The UAE extension comes in three forms, each with its own audience. According to the .aeDA frequently asked questions, registration is possible directly at the second level (for example mycompany.ae) and also at the third level (for example mycompany.co.ae).

.ae at the second level: this is the open form, and the one we recommend to most of our clients among companies, shops and clinics. It is short, easy to remember, and carries the country signal clearly.

.co.ae and the rest of the third level: restricted zones that need documentation. .co.ae is for companies, while .net.ae, .org.ae, .sch.ae, .ac.ae, .gov.ae and .mil.ae are for specific types of organisation, and they require a business registration or a certificate from the relevant ministry, whereas direct second-level .ae remains the unrestricted zone, according to the Wikipedia article on .ae.

امارات. in Arabic script: an internationalised domain name (IDN) equivalent to .ae, which appears in the root zone in Punycode as xn--mgbaam7a8h, as shown in the IANA record for امارات.. It suits brands whose name is Arabic in the first place and whom people search for in Arabic; the clients of ours who register it take it alongside .ae, not instead of it.

Form Level Who it is for Documents Best use
.ae Second (unrestricted zone) Anyone who meets the eligibility policy Registrant data required by the eligibility policy The company’s main website and official email
.co.ae Third (restricted zone) Commercial companies Business registration A company that wants to show its commercial status, or whose name is taken under .ae
امارات. Second, in Arabic script Brands with an Arabic name As set by the dotEmarat policy Arabic campaigns and marketing material alongside .ae

If your hesitation is between the UAE extension and .com, the summary of our earlier comparison is this: .ae for your local market, .com for anyone selling outside the country, and a fair number of our clients need both.

Who Can Register a .ae Domain, and Where

Eligibility: the criteria are set in the .aeDA Domain Name Eligibility Policy, published together with the dotEmarat policy, the Acceptable Use policy, the Complaints Handling policy and the Dispute Resolution policy on the .ae policies page. We do not summarise the clauses here, so as not to freeze text that may change, but the practical rule we work by is this: prepare the details of the entity the domain will be registered to before you start, not after you find the name available.

First come, first served: names are registered on a first-come, first-served basis, and a label must be between 2 and 63 characters long, as stated in the .aeDA frequently asked questions. There is no waiting list, and anyone who believes a name registered by someone else infringes their rights turns to the dispute resolution policy, not to a new registration request.

Registrar, not reseller: registrars accredited by .aeDA are the only ones with direct access to the registry; resellers are appointed by registrars and are not accredited by the administration. Only your registrar can change your domain data, with your permission, and .aeDA stipulates that registrars take a maximum of five days to apply changes, according to the same FAQ. The list of accredited registrars is published on the accredited registrars page; check it before you pay anyone.

Where we sit in that chain: we register and manage .ae, .co.ae and .com domains for our clients through our portal, and we handle renewals, DNS settings and the link to hosting and email. To find out who owns an already registered domain, the registry’s official lookup tool is whois.aeda.net.ae, and we explained how to read its results in our guide to checking a domain owner.

How to Register a .ae Domain Step by Step and Connect It to Your Server

1. Check availability: type the name into the domain checker on our portal and you will see the status of .ae, .co.ae and .com together, with the current price on the portal. If the name is taken, you have another form or another name, and we collected the useful tricks in our guide to checking domain availability.

2. Choose the form: direct .ae for most cases, .co.ae if you want to show your commercial status or the name is taken at the second level, and امارات. if your brand has an Arabic name. If you have an older .com, keep it and point it at the new site.

3. Supply the registrant data: the entity name exactly as on the licence, an email address the company owns rather than a particular employee, and a phone number someone answers. This data is what proves your ownership later in any transfer or dispute, and it is where the registrar sends renewal notices.

4. Point the domain at the server: the domain is the address; the server is where the website files and the mailboxes live. The two are connected through DNS records: an A record for the server address, an MX record for mail, and TXT records for SPF and DKIM so your email does not land in spam. We explained each record in our DNS records guide, and if your hosting is with us we set them for you as part of our hosting services without you touching anything.

5. Turn on auto-renewal: choose a registration term longer than one year if the domain is your company’s name, enable auto-renewal, and make sure the payment card on the portal is valid. In our experience, the domains clients lose are rarely stolen; they expire and nobody notices, because the renewal notice went to the email of an employee who has left.

What .ae Does for Customer Trust and for Search Engines

A local signal for the buyer: from our experience with shops, clinics and service offices in the country, a UAE customer comparing two websites leans towards the one ending in .ae, because they assume the business is present here and reachable if something goes wrong. The extension does not sell for you, but it removes a question from the visitor’s mind before they ask it.

A geographic signal for search engines: a country-code extension tells the search engine that your target audience is in the UAE, without the manual geo-targeting settings you need with a .com. This does not mean a higher ranking by itself; content, site speed and links are what lift a site, but .ae settles the question of which market you are addressing.

Official email: an email address on your company’s .ae domain is taken more seriously than a free one, especially when writing to government bodies and procurement departments in large companies. We see this in practice when a client asks us to move their mail from a free address to their domain after their messages were rejected or ignored by the recipient.

Pairing with .com: if you sell or export outside the country, register .com as well, point it at the same site, and keep .ae as the primary address for the local market. The reverse arrangement, .com primary with .ae secondary, suits companies whose customers are mostly outside the UAE, and that is a decision we help you make before the purchase, not after it.

The Mistakes We See at Our Clients

Letting the domain expire: most of the “save our website” requests we receive are caused by an expired domain, not an attack or a server fault. The website and the email go down together, and the name may be registered to someone else after the grace period. The fix is simple: auto-renewal and a renewal alert that reaches more than one person.

Ignoring registrar lock and the transfer password: the domain cannot be moved to another registrar or have its data changed except on your request through your registrar, and that is the first guard against theft. Know where the lock is enabled in your control panel, keep the transfer password somewhere safe, and never send it to anyone except during a transfer you yourself requested.

Registering the domain in someone else’s name: an employee, the web designer, or a reseller who enters their own details. When that person leaves, you find yourself asking permission to manage your own company’s name. Register the domain in the entity’s name, with an email the entity owns. Registrant data is also personal data subject to data protection law, as we explained in our guide to the UAE data protection law for websites.

Buying from a reseller whose registrar you do not know: the cheap price at an unknown reseller costs you later when you need an urgent change and do not know who holds access to the registry. Always ask: which accredited registrar stands behind this company? If you do not get a clear answer, look elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I register a .ae domain if I am outside the UAE?

Eligibility is set by the Domain Name Eligibility Policy issued by the .ae Domain Administration, which is the reference a registrar uses when accepting or declining a request. Before you pay, send us the details of the entity you want to register under, and we will tell you whether it qualifies or whether another form suits your case better.

What is the difference between a .ae domain and a .co.ae domain?

The first sits at the second level, the unrestricted zone; the second sits at the third level, a restricted zone that needs documents such as a business registration. .ae is shorter and easier to remember, while .co.ae works when your name is taken at the second level or when you want to show your commercial status.

How long can a .ae domain name be?

Between 2 and 63 characters for the label before the extension, according to the .aeDA frequently asked questions. We recommend the shortest name that is easy to say and spell, because the domain will appear on business cards, invoices and signage. Avoid hyphens and digits where you can; they are the first thing lost in spoken conversation.

How do I find out who owns a specific .ae domain?

The registry’s official lookup tool is whois.aeda.net.ae, which shows the registrar, the registration and expiry dates, and registrant data to the extent the policy allows. If the name is taken and you want to negotiate for it, the registrar shown in the result is the official channel, and we can help you draft and follow up the request.
