.ae or .com — choosing the right domain for a UAE business

A UAE company registering its first domain faces a choice that looks trivial and is not: yourname.ae or yourname.com. The wrong answer costs you nothing today and a great deal in three years, when a competitor owns the one you skipped or a tender asks for a local presence you cannot show. This guide sets out what each extension actually signals, what it costs, how search engines treat it, and the arrangement most UAE businesses should end up with.

Quick Answer

.ae is the country-code domain of the United Arab Emirates, managed by the TDRA’s .ae Domain Administration and open to anyone worldwide. It signals a UAE business unmistakably, is geo-targeted to the UAE by search engines automatically, and is what government entities, banks and local buyers expect to see. .com is the global default: cheaper, familiar everywhere, and the right primary domain if most of your customers are outside the Emirates. For a business that sells in the UAE, the practical answer is both — one as the primary site, the other redirected to it — so that neither ends up in someone else’s hands. At BIGBANG ITS a .ae currently registers at USD 40.76 per year and a .com at USD 13.50 for the first year (USD 17.50 on renewal).

What Each Extension Says About You

An extension is the first thing a visitor reads and the last thing they think about consciously. A .ae address tells a Dubai procurement officer, an Abu Dhabi bank’s compliance team or a Sharjah customer that the company is here — registered, reachable, accountable under local law. That impression is worth more than any trust badge in the footer.

A .com says the company is global, or wants to be. For a software product sold to customers in twelve countries, or a trading company whose buyers are in Europe and Asia, that is the right message. For a clinic, a law firm, a contractor or a restaurant in the Emirates, a bare .com can read as “we could be anywhere”.

Registration Rules

The .ae registry dropped its local-presence requirement years ago; any individual or company anywhere can register a name under .ae, in Latin letters or, through the Arabic .امارات extension, in Arabic. Some second-level spaces remain restricted — .gov.ae, .ac.ae, .sch.ae and .mil.ae require the matching type of entity — but plain .ae is open.

Two practical differences matter. First, .ae registrations must go through registrars accredited by the .ae Domain Administration, which is why not every international registrar offers it, and why prices vary less than for .com. Second, the .ae registry publishes registrant details more fully than .com registries do since privacy rules changed; WHOIS privacy services common with .com are generally not available for .ae. Read our note on what domain protection actually covers before you rely on it.

Cost Over Five Years

The headline price hides the renewal price, and the renewal is what you pay for the rest of the domain’s life.

Extension First year Renewal Five-year total
.ae USD 40.76 USD 40.76 USD 203.80
.com USD 13.50 USD 17.50 USD 83.50
.ae + .com USD 54.26 USD 58.26 USD 287.30

Over five years the pair costs around USD 57 a year — less than one hour of anyone’s time spent recovering a brand name someone else registered. Prices are those in our client portal at the time of writing; see the domain registration page for current rates and other extensions.

How Search Engines Treat .ae and .com

Google treats .ae as a country-code top-level domain and geo-targets it to the United Arab Emirates automatically. You cannot change that in Search Console, and you would not want to: for searches made in the UAE, a .ae site starts with a location signal a .com has to earn through content, backlinks and manual targeting.

A .com is a generic TLD. It ranks anywhere, and you can tell Search Console which country it targets — but that is a setting, not a signal, and it competes with every other .com in the world for the same query. For a business whose search traffic should come from the Emirates, .ae is the stronger starting position. For a business targeting the Gulf as a whole, a .com (or a .ae for the UAE plus separate country sites) is more flexible.

None of this replaces the fundamentals. Extension is a small ranking factor; content, speed, hosting location and links are large ones. Our guide to why business websites are slow covers the part that usually matters more.

The Arrangement That Works for Most UAE Businesses

  1. Register both the .ae and the .com of your trading name on the same day, through the same registrar, on the same account. Add the Arabic .امارات if your brand is Arabic-first.
  2. Choose one as the primary. UAE-facing business: the .ae. Export or international business: the .com. Put the website, the email and the marketing on it.
  3. Redirect the other permanently (a 301) to the primary. Visitors who type either land in the right place; search engines consolidate the authority into one site.
  4. Set email on the primary only and let the secondary forward. Two mail domains means two places for SPF, DKIM and DMARC to go wrong — see SPF, DKIM and DMARC explained.
  5. Enable auto-renewal and two-factor authentication on the registrar account. Most lost domains are not stolen; they expire while the person who registered them is on leave.

When .com Alone Is the Right Call

If you sell almost entirely outside the UAE, if the brand is a product rather than a place, or if the .ae of your name is already taken by an unrelated business and buying it is not realistic, a .com primary with no .ae is defensible. Even then, check the .ae every few months: if it becomes available, register it before someone in your market does.

When .ae Alone Is Enough

Government suppliers, professional practices serving Emirates clients only, and businesses whose name is distinctly local sometimes skip the .com. The risk is small but real: a customer typing “.com” out of habit lands on a parked page or, worse, a competitor. At USD 13.50 a year, the .com is cheap insurance.
